| Summary: |
The town name KaiðiadÛrys was analysed as a compound form by Aleksandras Vanagas, who assumed its second component dor- to go back to dar- and to be connected with darÙti ëmake, manufactureí; the first component would then be the Slavicism kÂðÎ ëbasketí or Lith. ka§ðtis ëtap, plug; bolt, barí. On these assumptions, the name KaiðiadÛrys would have been derived from that of a class of craftsmen, viz. *kaðiadariai, ëmanufacturers of basketsí or *kaiðiadariai, ëmanufacturers of plugs, boltsí. Certain historical data, not mentioned by Vanagas and evidently unknown to him, as well as certain linguistic features of the town name KaiðiadÛrys suggest that it could have been derived from a Tatar anthroponym Chaszajdar) rather than from an appellative. |
